It is a well-known fact that that black people are the primary drivers of trends in American pop culture. From Lebron to Lil Wayne to Omar from The Wire, urban black males are the arbiters of taste in this country: if they endorse something, it's only a matter of time before middle-class white teens are on into it too (from a safe distance, of course).
For example, the fairly recent phenomenon of everybody saying they are into big asses (via black guys loving fat chicks). Ever since Kim Kardashian's sex tape dropped, I feel like every girl with 20 excess pounds and hips that are 6 inches wide than her shoulders who would have been called a whale just a few short years ago was suddenly moved into the 'hot' category.

As someone who is not a whale slayer, I am confuse… is this trend just another example of mainstream America emulating urban blacks (I almost said 'aping' lol), or is it a reflection of a widespread, latent preference for huge butts that was suddenly revealed??
