Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey has been making quite a name for herself lately. Of course with a nick name like the “Rowdy Ronda Rousey” would you expect much less. She has not only appeared on the cover of ESPN’s 2012 body issue and has threatened to punch Kim Kardashian. She is now she’s calling out fellow Olympian Michael Phelps for being a snob.
Rousey and Phelps both competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics where Phelps won a eight gold medals in swimming and Rousey one bronze medal in judo. Rousey in a recent interview recounts her experience with Phelps, she describes him as remaining aloof at a party celebrating all the members of Team USA.
“These NBA players are a bigger deal than this guy, and they’re hanging out with us,” says Rousey. “We’re teammates. We’re not a bunch of groupies. Come hang out with us.”
She goes on to say the same thing happened when members of Team USA visited “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
“I don’t like being somebody’s teammate and being treated like I’m a groupie,” she says. “I didn’t even want to go out of my way to say hello to that guy. Get over yourself. All you do is swim. If someone slapped you every time you jumped in the pool, I might have a little respect, but I was a swimmer before I did this stuff, and you can’t tell me that swimming is OH MY GOD, because it’s not.”
Well Phelps could follow up with his own comments stating Ronda Rousey is not all that cause all she does is arm bars, but you would never hear that from this champion. Phelps had 16 medals from his previous efforts in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008). And yet today he shatters a world record for medals.
Ronda just last week was chastising UFC ring girls for their Playboy spreads. After earlier this year criticizing Miesha Tate for her photo’s prior to there title fight.
Here are her recent comments against UFC’s ring girls for appearing in Playboy during her recent appearance on TapOut radio:
“With all these ring girls and their vaginas, – all of this goes back to advice my mom gave me. She gave me this one piece of advice, which I still hold dear. She said, ‘Look, whatever pictures you put out there are gonna be out there forever, so just think that one day your 12 or 13-year-old son or daughter is going to see those pictures. Whatever you want your son or daughter, or even your 13-year-old little sister to see, keep that in mind.’ So, whatever I’m not gonna show on a beach, I’m not gonna show in a magazine. These girls are going to have to explain to their kids one day why mommy’s ass and vagina are all over the place.
One may call her a hypocrite but how do you find the fine line of being professional and yet hypocritical because you do the same yourself?
Thanks to Karyn Bryant with MMA Heat she interviewed Miesha Tate and asked her opinion on the matter. She put it into the most conclusive statement. “it’s not ok to talk crap about the ring girls and get 1% less naked and say it’s ok to me it falls into the sort of hypocrisy” Miesha states “I understand a difference of Playboy and USPN Magazine but when Ronda says pick up a issue to see me artistically nude, but I don’t believe any straight man in the world looks at that magazine and says oh that’s a beautiful athletic body, no it’s like awh man what can I see or what has she left to the imagination.” If you want to see the whole interview with Miesha Tate view it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMtKWezX_u4
