Now Showing: The Truman Show (1998)
Director: Peter Weir
Stars: Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney
Have you ever felt that all the crazy shit that happens to you must be all for someone else’s entertainment? Whether it’s God, your family, or maybe even an entire nation that has watches as you’ve been secretly filmed your entire life and you are, unbeknownst to you, in fact the star of a TV show?
…No? Never? Not even a little bit? Huh…. Must just be me then. The Truman Show stars Jim Carrey, who plays an insurance salesman who discovers that his entire life actually a TV show.

Lingering Lines
Mike Michaelson: Christof, let me ask you, why do you think that Truman has never come close to discovering the true nature of his world until now?
Christof: We accept the reality of the world with which we’re presented. It’s as simple as that.

Christof: As Truman grew up, we were forced to manufacture ways to keep him on the island.
[flashback to Truman at school]
Young Truman: I like to be an explorer, like the great Magellan.
Teacher: [rolling down a map of the world] Oh, you’re too late. There’s really nothing left to explore.

Truman: Good morning, and in case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!

Garage Attendant: [the Truman Show has ceased transmission] What else is on?
Garage Attendant: Yeah, let’s see what else is on.
Garage Attendant: Where’s the TV guide?
Memorable Moment
When Marlon discusses Truman’s concerns with him, he completely disregards Truman’s fears by using their friendship as a means to convince Truman that he would never lie to his best friend. Yet, all the while, the Creator, Christof, is feeding his emotionally charged words to him. It is at the point when we realise that Truman has no one to turn to, no one he can really trust and despite being the central figure in a TV show, in reality he is all alone.

Why it’s earned a Nostalgia Nights Nomination?
The Truman Show is a funny film with such a bizarre concept. Jim Carrey perfectly plays the role of Truman, delivering his quirks and catchphrase hilariously. There’s not much more I can add on to this, I’m my opinion. It’s a great film, with a character you feel sympathy for, and cheer for. It is a film which I enjoy watching every time I sit down to view it.

Inspired Insight
Insight…hmmm. Perhaps maintain a constant vigilance incase you are secretly the star of a TV show? Never trust anyone and always remain alert, incase the Producer or crew filming you make a slight hiccup and you can catch them in the act!
In all seriousness though, perhaps this film raises the question that with our ever changing and improving technology is it morally right to do something, just because we have the ability to? In the case of Christof, was it right to remove a boy from reality and film his life and lie to him, convincing him he lives in this make-believe town? Is it right, or is it cruel? The Truman Show addresses the ideas of humanity and what a values are in this rapidly evolving society.
