Full disclosure: Not only am I totally OVER the speculation about Benedict Cumberbatch’s not-so-secret girlfriend Sophie Hunter, I have this weird mental block where I keep writing her name as “Sophie Turner,” as in Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones. Maybe I would care about this more if Benedict was dating Sophie Turner/Sansa. That would be very interesting. Turner’s pretty young though – too young for Benedict. As for Benedict’s actual relationship with Sophie Hunter, I think they’re really dating and I think they’re really trying to keep it mostly undercover. Probably because a small percentage of Benedict’s Cumberbitches have gone a little bit crazy/unhinged and it’s not pretty. So, to all of those unhinged Cumberbitches, all I have to say is: please sit down and take a deep breath. There’s a new rumor about Benedict and Sophie and you’re not going to like it.
Get ready for some bad news, ladies – Benedict Cumberbatch could soon be off the singles market. The handsome Sherlock star flew to Edinburgh last week to see the mother of his girlfriend Sophie Hunter, prompting speculation he is preparing to ask for her daughter’s hand in marriage.
Benedict and Sophie have gone to great lengths to avoid being seen together in public since they first met in 2009, but broke cover recently to appear arm-in-arm at the wedding of the actor’s old school pal, James Rhodes.
Sophie is said to be close to her mother Anna after her parents divorced when she was a child. While the couple were in Edinburgh, I hear they toured the Royal Botanic Garden.

Do I believe that Benedict is about to settle down with Sophie? Eh. And that’s not my Cumberlunacy speaking. I’m judging him from his own interviews and what he says about his own priorities these days, priorities that seem more career-oriented than wife-oriented. Plus, he and Sophie might have known each other for years but their relationship is relatively new. They’ve maybe been dating, what? Six months?
Last thing – The Wrap published a Doctor Strange casting-rumor article which I’ve now mentioned in like four different posts. That’s because The Wrap threw every name ever into the mix, including Benedict Cumberbatch. According to The Wrap’s sources, Benedict is “still in the mix” when it comes to casting Doctor Strange:
Multiple agency sources have told TheWrap that Cumberbatch remains high on the studio’s list and they were surprised when the actor’s name was omitted from this week’s round of media reports. Marvel has long wanted to be in business with Cumberbatch, who is as hot as ever thanks to the awards buzz surrounding his performance in “The Imitation Game.” However, Cumberbatch’s schedule may prove too tricky to overcome, as he has to film the new season of “Sherlock” and plans to do a play next year. His agent did not immediately return TheWrap’s request for comment.

Sources say that the “four frontrunners” are now Benedict, Joaquin Phoenix (he doesn’t want it, his publicist says), Colin Farrell and Keanu Reeves. While I think Benedict would be a great “company man” for Marvel and Benedict can play anything, I think the scheduling conflicts will mean Benedict can’t sign up. He’s booked solid for the next year, isn’t he? Still… otters are crafty. Maybe it will happen.
